Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Remove the wheels and support the rear knuckle with a floor jack. Remove the mounting fasteners for the front or rear lateral arm from the rear knuckle and the crossmember, noting that on 1997 and earlier models, the inboard end of the lateral arms shares the same mounting bolt as the outboard end on all models. There is no need to change the adjustment of the rear lateral arm for removal, as doing so will adversely affect rear wheel alignment; if replacing this arm, match the length of the new arm to the old one closely and have the vehicle's wheel alignment adjusted after reassembly. Remove the front or rear lateral arm, and for trailing arm removal, take off the parking brake cable bracket from the arm. Remove the bolts from each end of the trailing arm and then take out the arm. Inspect the bushings on the arm(s) for wear and deterioration, and if replacement is needed, take the arm(s) to an automotive machine shop for bushing replacement, ensuring that replacement bushings are available beforehand. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Finally, have the rear wheel alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
