To remove the steering wheel, first turn it so the wheels are straight ahead, then turn the ignition key to Off and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. For models from 2001 to 2006, remove the plastic covers on the sides of the steering wheel and take out the airbag module retaining screws, which have Tone heads. Carefully pull off the airbag module, avoiding any strain on the wiring, and disconnect the electrical connectors, ensuring to release the safety latches before doing so. Place the airbag in a safe location with the pad facing up. Make match marks on the steering shaft and hub for proper reinstallation, then remove the nut and disconnect any horn wiring, ensuring all airbag wiring is identified by bright yellow sheathing. Attempt to remove the steering wheel by shaking it back and forth; if unsuccessful, use a steering wheel puller, avoiding any hammer use. Lift the wheel from the column while carefully threading the wires through. For installation, ensure the front wheels are straight ahead. If the clock spring is not centered, adjust the hub until it is, counting the turns to find the neutral position. Align the mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft, slip the wheel onto the shaft, and install the nut, tightening it to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connectors for the airbag module and any other connectors, ensuring the module connector locks are secure. Finally, install the airbag module and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque, then reconnect the negative battery cable.
