    Q:
How do you safely remove and reinstall a steering wheel and airbag module on Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
Leave the car facing or parallel to the particular direction and remove the cable connection from the battery's negative terminal. Turn off the airbag system, then unscrew the screws on the back of the steering wheel which secure the airbag to the wheel. Pry the airbag module upward from the steering wheel, and then detach the remaining electrical connectors; these connectors are broadband and possess clips that must be unlocked in order to remove them. Carry out the procedures as follows; Pull out the connectors from the airbag module and set the module aside safely. Then, disconnect the steering wheel by loosening the steering wheel retaining nut and take markings of the steering wheel hub to the steering shaft for refitting. To remove the steering wheel, I again used a steering wheel puller attentively ensuring that the puller screw was seated properly on the steering shaft, but care was taken not to thread the bolts beyond necessary to avoid hitting the airbag clock spring. Remove any further electrical connectors and clamp the steering wheel on its sustainment while pulling the wiring harness through the hole on the wheel. Do not twist, force rotate or apply torque to the clockspring of the steering and airbag system, the steering shaft or the front wheels with the steering wheel off as this might damage the airbag clockspring. In case they are needed, the clockspring can be eradicated by retiring the bezel of the steering column, cutting off electrical connections from the clockspring, and separating it from the combined switch. Additionally, to center the airbag clockspring, turn it clockwise until it will no longer move and then counter clockwise about 2-3/4(turns) so that the small arrows are located at the top of the clockspring. It is the reverse process for removal while making sure that the clockspring of the airbag is in central position before tightening the bolts that hold the steering wheel, where the pins of the clockspring engulfs the slots in the steering wheel hub, and the marks of the steering shaft and the hub of the steering wheel meet. Secure the steering wheel nut to the required torque, fit the airbag assembly to the steering wheel making sure all electrical connections are made and tighten the fixing bolts to the necessary torque and enable the airbag.
