The procedure for parking brake shoe replacement applicable for 2009 and earlier models of L200 is the following. To start with, first extract the rear brake discs and, if you are working on 2011 or later models, also detaching the Parking brake cable from the lever on the backing plate. Check the remaining thickness of the lining material on the shoes; normally when gets to 1/32 inch or below, the lining will have to be replaced. Rinse the brake parts with brake system cleaner as well. Continue with the illustrations of how to replace the component: firstly, you have to remove the upper return spring and separate the shoes, then, remove the adjuster and, at the same time, pay attention to which way it faces, and clean the backing plate before making any changes. Apply high temperature brake grease on the shoe contact area, also, unscrew and remove the shoe hold-down retainers and springs, then cleaning the area of the adjuster assembly, apply the necessary lubrication on the moving parts of the adjuster assembly, finally, re- install the hold-down springs and retainers. Take off the shoes from backing plate, place new shoes at the correct position along with the incorporate the lower return spring and the adjuster in the right direction, followed by the incorporation of the upper return spring. Subsequently, fit the brake disc correctly into the brake drum and tighten three lug nuts on the studs to secure it briefly. Pull out the hole plugs from the brake discs and fine-tune the parking brake shoe clearance with the help of the adjuster star wheel until the shoes engage with the discs and the discs cannot be rotated. Retreat from the adjusters five notches and replace the hole plugs. After that, fit the brake caliper and fasten the bolts on the brake caliper very tightly to the torque specified by the manufacturer. Last, but not least, tighten the wheel lug nuts to the recommended torque factor and secure the parking brake with about 45 pounds of force; in this way, count the number of clicks; it should correspond to the number on the steering wheel; if not, adjust the settings.
