If replacement is necessary, which is the case when the wheel cylinders have to be replaced because of leakage or excessively sticky feel to the steering wheel, it is advised that both wheel cylinders should be replaced at once instead of going for a reconditioning service. The first step will be the complete disassembly removal of the brake drum and brake shoes. Subsequently, unscrew the brake line fitting which is located at the rear side of the wheel cylinder with flare-nut wrench and while doing so should not pull the metal line aside since this may bend it. Pull out the bolts that were holding the wheel cylinder to the brake backing plate and thereafter, the wheel cylinder should be pulled out. In order to avoid brake fluid leaks and the admission of dirt to it, have the end of the brake line plugged. For installation, put on the new wheel cylinder, then attach the brake line, without over-tightening it as this will make it to cross-thread. After ensuring that the fasteners are properly in place, just tighten the brake line fitting. Last but not the least, release the pressure of the brake system and make sure the stop working durability is checked before going for a drive in the traffic.
