    Q:
How can you safely replace a master cylinder without damaging the Kia Sorento's paint or finished surfaces? Posted by Customer
    A:
Brake fluid can damage paint or finished surfaces, so it's important to cover all body parts and avoid spills during the procedure, cleaning up any spills immediately with water. Begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. For 2011 or later models, remove the air filter housing and air intake duct. Use a syringe or an old turkey baster to remove as much fluid as possible from the reservoir, then unplug the electrical connector for the brake fluid level warning switch. Place rags under the fittings and prepare caps or plastic bags to cover the ends of the lines once disconnected. Loosen the fittings at the ends of the brake lines where they enter the Brake Master Cylinder using a flare-nut wrench to prevent rounding off the flats. Carefully move the brake lines away from the Brake Master Cylinder and plug the ends to avoid contamination. Remove the nuts attaching the Brake Master Cylinder to the power brake booster and pull the Brake Master Cylinder off the studs, taking care not to spill fluid or bend the brake lines. If necessary, remove the brake lines going to the ABS actuator from the Brake Master Cylinder if they cannot be moved aside without damage. Before installing the new Brake Master Cylinder, bench bleed it by mounting it in a vise and attaching a pair of bleeder tubes to the outlet ports. Fill the reservoir with the recommended brake fluid and slowly push the pistons into the Brake Master Cylinder using a large Phillips screwdriver to expel air into the reservoir. Repeat this until no more air bubbles are present, then remove the bleed tubes one at a time and install plugs in the open ports to prevent leakage and air entry. Install the reservoir cover, then position the Brake Master Cylinder over the studs on the power brake booster, tightening the attaching nuts only finger tight initially. Thread the brake line fittings into the Brake Master Cylinder, adjusting the position slightly if needed to avoid stripping the threads. Tighten the mounting nuts to the specified torque and secure the brake line fittings. Fill the Brake Master Cylinder reservoir with fluid and bleed the Brake Master Cylinder and brake system by having an assistant pump the brake pedal, holding it to the floor while loosening the fitting nut to allow air and fluid to escape, repeating this until the fluid is clear of air bubbles. Keep plenty of rags on hand to catch any fluid, as brake fluid can ruin painted surfaces. If the Brake Master Cylinder-to-ABS actuator brake lines were removed, bleed those lines at the ABS control unit as well. Finally, complete the installation by reversing the removal steps and carefully testing the operation of the brake system before returning the vehicle to normal service.
