To remove the rack and pinion from Sephia and Spectra models (except 2.0L), park the vehicle with the front wheels straight, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front, and support it securely on jackstands. Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels, then remove the front wheels. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir, and remove the splash shield under the engine compartment. Mark the relationship of the intermediate shaft U-joint to the rack and pinion input shaft from inside the vehicle, then remove the pinch bolt securing the U-joint. Remove the nuts securing the sealing cover, detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles, and for models with a manual transaxle, disconnect the shift control and extension rods. Place a drain pan under the rack and pinion, detach the power steering pressure and return lines, and cap the ends to prevent fluid loss. Remove the bracket supporting the pressure and return lines. For 2.0L models (except Sportage), remove the front portion of the exhaust system, the bolts securing the engine mount to the subframe, support the rear of the subframe with a floor jack, and remove the rear subframe mounting nuts and control arm rear bushing bracket bolts before lowering the subframe enough for rack and pinion removal. For all models, remove the fasteners from the rack and pinion mounting brackets, carefully lower the rack and pinion to separate it from the intermediate shaft U-joint, and guide it out the right side of the vehicle, taking care not to damage the sealing cover. For Sportage models, lower the subframe, remove the two rack and pinion mounting bolts on the left side and the clamp bolts on the right side, and remove the rack and pinion from the subframe. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to align the marks on the rack and pinion's input shaft with the intermediate shaft U-joint, tighten the mounting bracket bolts to the specified torque, and for 2.0L and Sportage models, tighten the subframe nuts and control arm rear mounting bolts securely. Fill the power steering pump with the recommended fluid, bleed the system, and recheck the fluid level while checking for leaks. Run the engine to check for proper operation and leaks, shut it off, and recheck fluid levels before reconnecting the negative battery cable and having the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
