    Q:
How do you remove and install the ignition switch and key lock cylinder for the Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
To start up the SEPHIA AND SPECTRA models, first of all, you need to take out the steering column covers. Pull the two halves of the electrical connector away from each other by pressing the top of the release tab and remove the electrical connector for the lock cylinder buzzer. Because the ignition lock cylinder housing is welded to the steering column at three points of a shear-head bolt, use a center punch to mark these points, then drill a hole in the center of each bolt with a 3/16-inch (5 mm) drill bit and unscrew them with a screw extractor. Pull out the keys and take off the ignition switch/ignition lock cylinder from the steering column. As a final step before turning in the new shear-head bolts, start the vehicle and make sure that the steering wheel lock mechanism is proper and the ignition key turns properly in the lock cylinder after that tighten the bolts up to the point where the heads shear off. For the SPORTAGE models only and depending on the model trim, disconnect knee bolster trim panel and two pieces of the steering column covers. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the ACC position, insert an awl or a small screwdriver between the cylinder stem and the lock base and apply pressure towards the back of the car to gently push out the lock pin and firmly pop out the ignition lock cylinder. Pull out the IGN electrical connector, unbolt the Ignition switch screw, and set the IGN switch aside. Installation is the reverse of removal, in that the components are put in place according to the reverse of this sequence.
