    Q:
What are the features and safety measures of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Air Bag in Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
The models of 1995.5 and 1996 have an option of Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags, which are courtesy names for additional mechanisms that protect the driver and the frontal passenger in head-on or frontal impacts. This is true even for the earlier models which make use of two crash sensors that are positioned behind the front bumper and a discriminating sensor that is part of the airbag diagnostic unit; and the later models which features an RF single crash sensor that is installed in the diagnostic unit section. Airbags are deployed on the steering wheel and the driver's side of the dash board floor and the 2001 and after models include occupant's side airbag assemblies and seat belt tensioners which tightens the belt during sharp impacts. The driver's side airbag inflator is located in the center of the steering wheel whereby electrical signal immediately ignites the airbag almost immediately. The location of the passenger's side air bag is adjacent and slightly above the glove box and it consists of a larger air bag than that of the driver side and it has a textured trim cover that separates in two when the air bag is inflated. Moreover, at the sides of the seat backs there are side-impact ones while side curtain ones genetically unrolling from the headliner shield passengers heads. The airbag diagnostic unit incorporated in the car provides power to the airbag system and senses its performance every time the car is switched on and blinks the "SRS" light if in its normal state. In the case of a fault, the light will glow or blink, hence the need for servicing by a professional. When operating an equipment located close to the steering wheel or instrument panel, the system must be de-activated in the following way: The wheels of the car should be aligned straight, the steering key turned to the lock position, the negative terminal of the battery should be disconnected and the attendant should wait for three minutes to allow the back up power source drain. When airbag circuits are remove, it must be done in a manner that the venting side of the airbag module is turned in the direction of the body or any other part that is being worked on or exposed to the airbag explosion; airbag should not be placed upside down during the use. Perform no voltage or current measurements or use any electrical test equipment on any SRS components, because it might trigger the deployment of the airbag. The electrical welding should not be carried out on vehicles with installed airbags without the first removal of the airbag electrical connectors. Nondeployed or partially deployed live airbag modules or seat belt pretensioners should be taken back to a dealer service department or an authorized body shop. The removal and installation of the driver's side airbag module and clock spring has to be carried out in accordance to the procedure while the vehicular passenger side airbag has to only be removed if deployed and restored by an authorized personnel.
