    Q:
Do you need a spring compressor for this procedure, and what should you consider before starting any work on struts or coil springs on Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
You'll need a spring compressor for this procedure, which is available for daily rental at most auto parts stores or equipment yards. If the struts or coil springs show signs of wear such as leaking fluid, loss of damping capability, or physical damage, explore all options before starting any work, as the strut coil spring assemblies are not serviceable and must be replaced if a problem arises. Strut assemblies complete with springs may be available on an exchange basis, so check the cost and availability of parts before disassembling your vehicle. To disassemble, remove the strut and spring assembly and mount it in a vise lined with wood or rags to prevent damage, ensuring not to tighten excessively. Following the tool manufacturer's instructions, install the spring compressor on the spring and compress it until all pressure is relieved from the upper spring seat, which can be verified by wiggling the spring. Hold the damper shaft from turning with a socket and unscrew the damper shaft nut with a box-end wrench, then remove the nut and upper mount, laying the parts out in the order removed. Check the rubber portion of the upper mount for cracking and replace it if necessary. Remove the upper spring seat from the damper shaft, inspecting the rubber for cracking and hardness, and replace it if needed. Also, check the bearing in the spring seat for smooth operation and replace it if it doesn't turn smoothly. Carefully lift the compressed spring from the assembly and set it aside, marking the springs LEFT and RIGHT if disassembling both to avoid mixing them up. Remove the dust cover and bump stop from the shaft, checking them for cracking or deterioration and replacing as needed. For reassembly, extend the damper rod to its full length and install the rubber bump stop and dust cover. Place the compressed coil spring onto the lower seat of the damper, ensuring the end rests against the raised stop, then install the upper insulator and spring seat. Finally, install the upper mount and mounting nut, tightening it to the specified torque before removing the spring compressor tool and installing the strut/spring assembly.
