    Q:
How do you remove and reinstall the Camshaft and Lash Adjuster on Kia Optima? Posted by Customer
    A:
To 'pull off' the VVT assembly on the intake camshaft sprockets, DO NOT UNSCREW THEM, simply loosen the center bolt of the camshaft that is from the end part of it. Start by having a removal of valve covers followed by proper positioning of the engine at TDC as well as the belt holding the engine in place being removed. Carefully align match marks for the cam timing on sprockets and the engine and as a reminder, while bringing the camshaft out, do not interchange camshafts 1 and 3 as well as 2 and 4. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by turning it by 1/4 turn at a time beginning with the outer ones and going inwards. The bearing caps are anodised for intake and exhaust and should be fitted with numbers; if there are no numbers, then place your own numbers. Take out the bearing caps and carefully raise the camshaft out; it has to be noted that the camshafts in each head are intermeshed by a timing chain. Place the bearing caps in the correct orientation and in case they are necessary, take out the Lash Adjusters for further use in assembly. For inspection, gases should use the specifications for the V6 engines. Finally apply camshaft installation lubricant on the lobes and bearing journals and the Lash Adjusters should be returned to their previous positions. Fit the timing chains on sprockets of both the camshafts for each pair and align the marks on the chains with the marks on them. Put on the bearing caps in numerical sequence with the various orientations indicated to the drivebelt side of the engine, tighten the bolts in 1/4-turn sequences, beginning from the central cap onto the outer ones. Install new camshaft oil seals and the repair work is done in reverse order of the removal as far as the timing mark is concerned until a major damage of the engine can be prevented. Lastly start the engine and look for any wow and leaks and ensure that everything is working correctly, and if the hydraulic valve adjusters have been drained it may take several minutes for the valvetrain noise to disappear.

    Q:
How should valve clearances be adjusted for the 2005 Kia Sportage? Posted by Customer
    A:
Use a special lifter tool to adjust valve clearances, measuring and replacing shims as necessary to achieve the desired specifications. Repeat the adjustment process until all valves are within clearance specifications.
