Kia Sportage Throttle Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Throttle Position (TP) sensor on Kia Sportage?
A: To remove and install a Throttle Position (TP) sensor on 1994 up to 1997 models, first disconnect the electrical connector from the TP sensor and remove the TP sensor mounting screws. Ensure that when installing a new or old TP sensor, drive side of every tang(s) on end of throttle plate shaft engages non-slotted side of each tab on TP sensor is engaged. Proceed to appropriate TP sensor adjustment procedure with TP sensor installed, loose TP sensor mounting screws, and electrically disconnected TP connector. For B6 SOHC of 1994 and 1995 and B6 DOHC of 1995 connect an ohmmeter between terminals IDL and E on the TP sensor as well as insert a prescribed feeler gauge between the stop lever and throttle stop screw; then turn the tp so much that there will be continuity observed which will be ascertained by removing such a wire-like gadget before tightening tp's screws since no more continuity will be found. Check for continuity between terminals 1 and 2 of TP Sensor while at wide open throttle (WOT), in addition, ensure that throttle plate is closed by using specified feeler gauges to adjust until continuity occurs in case it does not. For BP DOHC models of 1995, also B6 DOHC models of 1996-97 verify throttle plate having been closed continuity should be checked between terminals number one (1) as well as two (2). This should be followed by adjusting t-p around till continuity means something different than before. Connect electrical connector back onto tp-sensor for BP DOHC models of years (19)96 & (19)97 within terminal three use back probe light green plus white wires then ground adjusting t-p until voltage reading falls within the range given in specification books. Make sure smooth rise in voltage with a wide-open-throttle-correct voltage at WOT; this is ensured through ensuring a throttling plate with smooth rise in voltage and the correct voltage at WOT. In (19)98 models and later, disconnect the electrical connector from the TP sensor, remove the TP sensor mounting screws and align the flat spot on throttle plate shaft with flat spot on rotating part of sensor when installing TP sensor. Then, install in reverse order.
